They tried, after Lindisfarne and the establishment of places like Dublin, but evidently lost. At least Dublin still is there...
It is true that from the later 9th century on Viking woodcarving displayed some definitely homespun variations on Irish knotwork. Both lions stretched to incredible length and forms, and certain plants. The Oseberg find has some particularly nice examples.
But then, maybe the knotwork was the reason why they went for the Caledonian monasteries the first time...

Note that one of the known dyonysic cults (Lodril) knows spells like "Suppress Oakfed". Why not "Suppress Tanien" as well?
