Andrew Behan's Voriof write up comes as a welcome shock given the arcadian image of both Voria & Voriof. The wolfskin  ritual gives a weight to "the boy's god" (& partly dispels the image of "innocence & naivety") as does Mr Raaterova's pedagogue, an individual I see as being more important among th DP Orlanthi than among those who can use dogs. "Yinkin the Shepherd" seems to rule out the alynx as a herding animal. This then presents the DP shepherd with a far more difficult job if the standard of "1 dog is worth 3 men" is aplied. Even the small flocks would require 4 men or older boys to effectively look after them, plus the younger boys being trained. The head shepherd soon finds himself in charge of a large staff of boys perhaps meeting once a week for training & worship.  Baden-Powell does rather spring to mind. This person is then highly influential in their socialisation their eventual progression into the Orlanth cult. The wolfskin ritual gives some idea of his possible standing in the community; socially powerful but partialy
outcast, probably the recipient of the guts in his own youth so not entirely trusted. He's a cannible ( NB.AFAIK BP was not a homophage) & has been a werewolf. He chooses to remain in the cult of his youth. This organisation of boys with their own rituals & work both of which are neccessary to the well being of the society, though not well regarded by

it, also produces the cohort effect found in many pre-industrial societies. All
the men of a similar age progress through the various stages of their society
as a group. Thus cementing the bonds of the Fyrd & Clan outside the ties of the immediate family. The cult not only provides shepherds but also gives the
boys a form of socialisation & a familiarity with ritual which exceeds that available from watching adult rituals. It is also a good training ground for  potential Odaylans. Finaly it provides a dicincentive for crying wolf. Do so & your guts are soup.

Why the Urban facination with molesting flocks? What are you boy some sort of broo? :-)
