Talking about Sun County

Not that I want to disrupt this ongoing discussion of Sun County spear-wall depth or the wood used for their spear shafts but, I do want to bring up something. Lee responded to Stephan that:

>> The Yelmalions in Sun County are specialized as mercenaries for the
>> nomads (who else could hire them the last five hundred years). So
>> the support elements disappeared to leave the only thing the nomads
>> could not provide, a core of dependable heavy infantry.
> I would think the Yelmalions would be used by more people than just
> the nomads. The Lunar empire could use them as could the city of
> Pavis at various times in history.

First observation - I suspect that many of the "ancient traditions" of Sun County date back no more than three generations (actually less), to the time of the Monrogh's visit and the ending of the Testing of Solitude.

Nick, that perennial source of good judgment commented:
>But the Lunars only came to Prax in 1610 -- that's five to ten years
>ago in most games' timelines -- while the city of Pavis was occupied
>by Trolls for most of the Third Age. Any examination of why the Sun
>Dome Templars came to be the way they are *today* has to take their
>recent history into account. And remember the exceedingly dodgy names
>of several Counts in the Light List... looks like Nomad involvement
>for sure!

Absolutely! Personally I suspect that the folk of Sun County had more in common with Oasis People during the Testing of Solitude (with a sun-worshipping cult) than they would ever care to admit.

Finally - remember, realistically there are approximately 800 templars and about 1,000 militia levies in Sun County, with maybe 50-60 years of institutional history (mainly defending the County against nomads). We aren't talking Sparta, Athens or even the Swiss. More like a outpost colony of Greeks in Bactria surrounded by hostile nomads.
