Egyptian and Chinese scripts arose at roughly the same time yet one is syllabic whereas the other is ideogrammic. Even in a gloranthan context, the Plentonian script of Dara Happa is sort of alphabetic whereas the Pelandans who live next door have an ideogrammic script. Thus I don't think we can determine what the script is based on its age.
