I think this is incorrect. They were trying to find the original set of gods that spawned all the sects they found in glorantha. An example is Worlath, a figure in their mythology, being known to the Theyalans as Orlanth.

Oh yes, they did. They ruthlessly exploited this phenomenon according to the introduction of the Entekosiad (the Paradox solution)
