>This is a new one on me and I like it. I had previously thought of Casino
>Town as full of mechanical Zistorite machines like 'Penny Falls', one armed
>bandits, roulette wheels, as well as all sorts of fairground type creations
>(test your strength, sharpshooting, etc etc.).

I still think many of the games in this way. The machine portions of the game are necessary to store the wagered powers, abilities, money or even simple intelligence and on rare occasions give them back. IMO if the one-armed bandits are not emptied regularly, they can become self aware and take off into the hills to become one-armed bandits that beat people to death if they are not feed with the right type of coins. The Talar of Casino Town tolerates this for it stops people leaving the city except by the approved routes.

The card games are more subtle and I think they use runic cards to weave complicated spells designed to trap and release powers etc. Since there's no machinery involved, I reckon the dealer has to be a sorcerer devoted to the game and the stakes can much higher, to wit one's immortal soul, fate of empires, forbidden secrets etc.

>Is their a known date for the founding of Casino Town?

No. It's unlikely to be earlier than the founding of the Zistorites.
