Before the Lunar Conquest, Far Point was a pretty heterodox 'culture'; now it's basically torn apart by rivalling cosmologies.

Yelmalio was introduced to Far Point by the Lunars in the latter half of the 16th century in an attempt to 'divide and conquer': Yelmalio is an alternative to both the Red Goddess and Orlanth for those who don't want to side with the Lunars and don't want to be hunted down as rebels. Converting to Yelmalio is a political move for the power-hungry who don't want to be branded traitors by the orlanthing rebels. Yelmalio is the most neutral political alternative available in Far Point.

The choice and conflicts between Red Goddess, Yelmalio, Bigger Wind and Orlanth (incl. Elmal, Stormbull, Vinga, the Gors) is mainly an issue for thanes, nobles and chieftains, though. The majority of carls and cottars worship neutral deities like Ernalda, Barntar, Heler etc. within traditional* orlanthing culture.

I think the Canon of seeing Far Point as particularly Yelmalo-ist stems from the freeform Home of the Bold, where Harvar is said to worship Yelmalio. Well, in the Sartar Book draft for HW he worships the Bigger Wind. It seems like he is trying to pull a Lokamayadon. - --
