I've always seen them as a lot like those itinerant smiths in India (whose name I always forget).
They definitely have an affinity for metal, and as such are probably among the best smiths and tinkers in Glorantha.

One way to think about it is that you perform a passion play: someone gets to play Jesus and carry a cross around, someone else plays his mom, another woman plays Mary Magdalene, etc. You re-enact an episode from a hero's life. This gives you, the participant (which is usually the entire community) a benefit similar to that which the original hero (or god) obtained. This being Glorantha, this is considered a magical ritual, and the participants will likely stake much of their own magic to make the ritual more powerful (making success more likely, as well as increasing the size of the benefit).
(You'll see this in King of Dragon Pass.)
