I guess one question is: if (say) Roan-Ur had succeeded in becoming Lunar Emperor, would he become the Red Emperor? (I'm sure this task is easiest for the "real" Red Emperor).

I do like MOB's interpretation of this, and hopefully the final writeup can have enough ambiguity to support both the old and new views.
