The description of Morokanth Thumbs from Borderlands says that after the survival covenant morokanth were disadvantaged compared to the humans because of their lesser ability to do delicate manipulations. "Eiritha took pity on her children and provided the potential for certain morokanth to gain the use of thumbs".

Although I have no specifics on the quest, it would seem likely that the morokanth would firstly have to win the lottery and/or prove their superiority over those humans which become herd men, perhaps risking (some or all of) their intelligence to do so.

From the morokanth's point of view "take pity" is a bit patronising. Better for them to gain the gift by impressing Eiritha that although they are already her best children, they could be even better if they could only do the one thing those inferior humans are best at. Perhaps by succeeding in tests of strength, intelligence, etc, but narrowly failing in tests of manipulation?

Just a few late night ramblings!
