    Melissa Scott wrote a trilogy; 5/12ths of Heaven, Silence in Solitude, and The Empress of Earth. Definately lots of wizardry/alchemy involved. They may be hard to find though, as the came out circa 1985.

    Hmmm, speaking of ISBN numbers, the middle book is 0-671-65699-7.
