This still seems dodgy to me, but I think it'll just take us around in circles. Your reminder of myths where gods are blinded or lead astray is a more fruitful answer to my dilemma, at least on the large scale (heresy and schism) level. Thanks for your efforts to enlighten (if not illuminate) me, they have been very helpful.
