In practice, I imagine this would become abusive. (After all, what if the winner's statement of intent had nothing to do with wounding the loser?). It also turns HW combat back into a trauma clinic roleplaying game, which was not one of the designer's intentions.

I think this would represent Rob bidding loadsa AP's on a risky move, not Rob losing an opposed resolution roll and choosing to take a wound rather than be wiped out. That is: his statement of intent for that round started, "I grab his sword with my bare hand..." (intakes of breath from GM and other players...).
