If I followed the conversation correctly, someone
suggested that Greg sees the difficultly level of the
quest and the benefits derives as being set
independently of the level of its participants and of
each other. If this is the case, the implication is
that there may be many quests where the difficulty
level is so disproportionate to the benefit gained
that no one does them. E.g. "Cut off Zork Zoran's big
toe in hell to get the secret of Effective Toothpick
18." I'm not sure how I feel about the implication.
On one hand, it means that there are lots of forgotten
paths that can be explored. (Hey, maybe you _really_
need a good toothpick.) On the other hand, it seems
awfully limiting of the possibilities.
All in all, I think I'm for the idea that the players
decide how big a benefit they want, then the narrator
sets the difficulty level. The difficulty would be
set by the path and the difficulty of the stations on
the path. I know this is not a democracy, but perhaps
a poll on this point might be useful market research
for Issaries?
