I have never (and don't intend to start) interpreted that 6-point rule as meaning you can make up abilities on the spot, only for occasions when there is no available USEFUL ability. Even then, I wouldn't allow creating a new ability specially to augment an existing one. Anyway, you only get one mundane augment, if 6 is the best you can muster, tough luck.
