Another way excessive masteries hurt play speed is that they bring the cancelled mastery special rules into play. (You can't just drop the bumps, since you could end up with two masters with target numbers of 2 and 3, missing all the time.) Since a missed roll may in fact win a round, you can't simply glance at the result and wince when you miss, and you have to keep consulting with the Narrator about whether or not your opponent has a mastery level.

(There are alternate proposals for dealing with the "drunken masters" problem, but all have various speed of play problems.)

Yeah, I know 2nd edition is unlikely to fix the game by reducing all numbers to where the system works better, but sometimes complaining makes me feel better. And hopefully people running Traveller or pirate games can adjust things, since they won't have to use Gloranthan supplements with too-large values.
