Hmm, I expect the Carl's always think a farmer would make the best leader, and the Weaponthanes Think a proven warrior should lead anyway, so a bias might seem like a good thing to many of the clan...

I doubt many Clan Chiefs retire voluntarily whatever cult they follow and whatever there status is, Being Chief is a prestigious position, but, OTOH a good chief knows when it is time to let someone new take over (A younger man, perhaps, or one for whom the Lunar Authorities aren't gunning...)
