I agree with the general ideas here (generalise a special case rule, etc), put particularly, I doubleplus agree on this score. Doubling, bad... A flat +20 (say, to wit a bump, as per an earlier suggestion) would just make oodles and oodles more sense. (Apologies to anyone that thinks that making sense is "simulationist".)
