While they can be overused, I've got to come out in favor of the judicious use of extended contests.

In our session two weeks back we played out an ambush by a group of Gargarthi bandits on the Heroes. The ebb and flow of AP (in particular a huge transfer due to a complete victory on the part of our greatsword wielding Humakti against incoming javelins) allowed us to visualize the flow of battle and to create some suspense that simple contests just can't match.
