Hmmm. Here's what I'm thinking now. All contests are one round (simple) or mult-round (extended). In the midst of a multi-round conflcit, the defender can choose to recieve the effects as though they were the result of losing a one round contest - meaning they get an impariment at the level of the AP bid - or they decide to take it as part of the ongoing contest.
The attacker in any multi-round contest can declare that he's foreging his round to do a one-round contest instead. If aimed at the defender, then the defender can't extend it because it's only a one rounder.
Is that getting closer to a coherent package? Still have problems? Playtest anyone?
