possibly, but IMO he was just injured.
Then the contest ended and he (no more able to fight Luke having been beaten by him) was badly weakened (-50%) when he attacked in simple contest Darth Sidious.  

Both rolled a fumble (with multiple masteries) and narrator decided both should die (in order to save the starring hero, of course).

Of course, being both narrator characters, narrator didn't need to rationalize the contest (nor to roll it) but in case some fan asked she would say so.
