In fact, in an extended contest, the archer's opponent could be "attacking" the archer with a non-combat ability--say, "Belittle With Sarcasm" (maybe augmented with a "Loud Voice" common magic talent). So, the archer is reduced to 0 AP, & it doesn't mean he's out of arrows or his bow is broken. It means he's so demoralized by his opponent, he can't bring himself to fight anymore.
