There are lots of examples where it makes snese for time to pass quickly in between highlights. Think of Jesus, most of his adventures would be table making and assorted carpentry, perhaps a simple contest for 10years - rather dull, so skip it until he becomes a bit more interesting.

The focus on character is really a focus on just a tiny part of a characters life if you go into every bit of detail. Say, a year at most if you do a lot of role playing. In some respects that is showing a lot less interest than a comparable amount of game time spent on a character turning from a young adult to a wizened old codger. One could argue that the short period that Jane's approach concentrates on might be the most interesting part of that character's life (if you were running Jesus you'd start the game with him aged 33, probably with a few sidekicks) but how would one run a Winston Churchill character without whizzing through various events, or Napoleon, even Alexander. Consider that people may be interested in playing this sort of character development story rather than just the final few days of fame and gory glory.
