I would have agreed with this last week - however we had a new lass start and she wanted to be a shaman. Well, I said that we can't do that but we can do her a character well on the way (we run a *highish * level game)
I think the best thing is to create a spiritist and then go through the process of becoming a Spiritist, and then upgrade him to a Practitioner.
What I did is let the player choose 5 charms and have 2 fetishes, one with 3 abilities and the other with 2 abilities. She then got a spirit ally as a sidekick.

There is a write up with rules on the Glorantha website - although rumour has it this is going to be extensively revised. My advice is just to use and adapt it to suit your needs.
