He wasn't necessarily. If he was, he blew his first action trying to enhance his Close Combat (Sword) with Flashy Swordplay.
Think how much shorter the film would have been had the Arab simply run up to Indy and cut him in half. Like I said, if he was the actor he blew his chances with an ill conceived unrelated action.
