Yes, there are definite advantages to rules-light systems when it comes to getting the details right :) Shame, the PHB WAS damned pretty and impressive... All that was really WRONG (as opposed to just obscure & inadequately explained) with HW were printing & format errors. Has any work been started on reformatting the basic books for a reprint?
