Here's a solution that still won't please Mikael, but goes slightly further than Roderick's solution without (hopefully) getting too bogged down.

A "Mundane" leap is resisted by the tree's "Tall" A "Mundane" leap augmented by magic is resisted by the tree's "Tall" A Magical Leap "Leap Over Trees" (Learned, no doubt from the Hero Cult of Horfstang Treeleaper (sp?)) Uses the base resistance of 14 Any other magical leap uses 14 augmented by the tree's "Tall"

This means that even with Magic, it is still easier to leap into the branches of a spreading chetsnut tree than over the top of a giant redwood...
