You mean the rate in increase in the ability rating. If we take the ability rating to be the logarithm of some 'underlying' linear scale, arithmetical (linear) increases in the ability rating correspond to exponential increases in the underlying scale.

There are plenty of natural and social processes that are exponential, so I think a logarithmic scale is a good thing.
