It's not strictly true IMO that individuality per se is possible only on the material plane, although it is extremely rare elsewhere.
Ghosts, spirit fragments, and various other broken otherworld beings refute this, but so in some cases do some dead, unhappy or otherwise, that successfully remain on this side of the veil ...
