I think the absense of ransoms is due to the new wealth system. Heroes don't have a lot of material goods that they can say 'these are my cows' - personaly, I make sure that clans pay ransoms for captured enemies. I regard the weregeld prices as being historically accurate but far too high for players to afford to pay. I admit I like the new wealth system for its flexility but its does have its problems.
Ransom = -5 permanent wealth (less valuable for a poor man but much more devastating). If you can't afford it, then the ransom is not paid. Of course your kin can pay it...
