Alternately, both are true. In 1619 the lunars brought the bat in, thinking that would be an easy way to finish off the situation. However it was driven off (resulting in much shock, loss of face, and the death of a few hundred slaves as an alternate meal).

Determined not to screw up again they spent a year organizing, then launched a sustained magical assault, bringing the bat back at the culmination. Once every couple of years sounds about right for how often the bat could be used?

Of course, just as easily sources got dates wrong. Some other major attack may have occured in 1619 and a later chronicler attributed the bat attack to that event too. *shrug* I think it is one of those areas in which campaigns can freely vary without any difficulties.
