For me it was a fantacy film. I know the reality of the era, and didn't see it as a historical film.

I don't expect much from Hollywood, and was suprised at how enjoyable this movie was. Suvi, my much smarter spouse, was annoyed in much the same way as my favorite Gloranthan author John Hughes seems to have been.

It's pretty and the budo-fantasy appealed to me. A great historical film it is not. For a realistic samurai film, try Kurosawa.
