It has been an awfully long time since the poor losers were adopted into the clan and an awful lot has happened to most Heortling clans over the last two millenia. IMG, the only remnant of the Eryain Ins is a certain social stigma associated with blonde hair (which is quite rare in the clan).

My game is premised on a lot of upward and downward mobility. Most of my players are grandchildren of a Colymar tribal king (Korlmar Kentventsson). Their bloodline is wealthy and they should have little difficult becoming carls - but right now they are largely cottars who must tend tend and protect the wealth of others. Folk from less wealthy bloodlines find it much harder to become carls (let alone thanes) - unless they are noticeably skilled, clever or lucky.
