I also use a simple contest for travel and let the players use almost any ability. They have to justify how their particular skill got them where they're going, so if it is Sword and Shield fighting then although they might get where they were going there will be other problems generated by hacking their way through the countryside. Failure puts them in another situation to be got out of with some other ability.
