 Note: I have to clarify my data. I'm using mediaeval info, not the ancient Greek that's already been mentioned.

 Plus, of course (and delving into the Greek), there's the hoplite's bronze _everything_, including (IIRC) 1 metre diameter dished shield.. . I'm note sure if they were bronze or bronze over wood.

 But they apparently couldn't afford the weight of any armour apart from helm and greaves with the shield. Eye candy for those that appreciate that sort of thing... ;)
