My take on this is that the major cults actually do require respect etc., though Gloranthan religions in general seem to put much more emphasis on praxis as opposed to doxis (John, you have changed me forever ;-) ).

But from some of the older Gloranthan stories (sorry, I do not have my sources here in Bangkok), Heroes do seem to treat the very specialist sub-cults as shops and this would imply that senior priests would treat these sub-cults as cash-tills. So in major religious centers you are likely to find that along with the majority mainstream religious workers, you will also find a surprising number of odd specialist cults. It may even be a job allocated by the high priestess/pope/whatever for otherwise useless people to be the sole member of some oddball but very occasionally critically useful sub-cult.

Harry Turtledove touches upon similar ideas in his fantasy novel "The Case of the Toxic Spell Dump" - IMNSHO, worth a read
