My first good thought took a different tack than what others have written.

What if the saved character has some characteristic that is only Darksensible which identifies her as important/prophesized/sacred in some way?

If the characteristic is inheritable, it would also explain the survival of the child she abandoned.

Possible characteristics:
She has an important troll's soul
She has the soul of some other darkness creature She is covertly possessed by a spirit under the control of the troll mothers.

Through darksense, she reveals the fabled sign of the Killer of Elves and Dwarves.

To Darksense, she looks just like Arkat.

She smells like the Betrayer of Men, a long rumored hero of the Black Eater.

Or going another way--her blood is poisonus to trolls. And elves. She's too dangerous to deal with as an adult, but back in the troll land, the "merciful" trolls are using her abandoned child as a elf poison factory.

I'm a sneaky bastard.
