Absolutely. The "Can't bring back anything" rule means that if you go on a quest without something that can be upgraded, traded, modified, added to, reduced, etc, then you're not going to be bringing back a *physical object* with magical powers. Most quests that produce a physical object require that you have a mundane version of the object that will be "filled" with the magic (or be transubstanitated into the magical object, or however you want to say it). So if the "reward" is a magical sword, you need to bring a sword along on the quest.

*But* you always bring at least one physical object along on a quest - your body (and knowledge, but that's not physical...). "Yeah, neat axe isn't it. It can chop down trees with one swing, and can never be stolen. How'd I get it? Oh I traded my Warrior skills for it..." It's just that most quests aren't about trading bits of yourself for goodies.
