Maybe that's how far out his farm is. I know there are a lot of farmers,
particularly in the Northern Territory, that use a plane 'cos a car takes
too long to get the 500+km each way to town for the shopping.
Distance here is a big thing (pun intended). ;)
The biggest station (farm) here was, until it was split in half for the
two sons to inherit, a couple of percent larger than Texas and ran several
hundred thousand cattle (IIRC and I expect to be corrected on the cows).
Boundary fence checking in some areas is normally done by plane because a
car takes too long and would require half a dozen cars running continuously
around the fence to keep up.
I have read of people travelling by plane getting over the central
desert, going to sleep and waking up still flying over the same desert five
hours later, and think they've only had a short nap 'cos nothing has
changed on the ground.
Driving 700km (or whatever it is--I know it takes a long time) to
Melbourne in one go is not a stretch for some people; I've done it several
times. 250km to Sydney for shopping is a day trip.
Basically, if it's under 100km it's almost walking distance...
I think only Pamalt really has the distances you get here; the Wastes are too variegated to really count.
