I sometimes do the same, for various reasons. These include:

  1. I don't have time to work out all the details. (Often times it doesn't matter.)
  2. Players will often come up with something more fun in any case.
  3. Players will generate a variety of theories, and I can direct the story to the one they seem most amused by.
  4. If I have a Cool Secret (TM), I may be tempted to railroad the plot so as to reveal it. Even if the players show no interest in uncovering it.
