I´d agree also that people would expect inflation and would admire most the person who sticks closest to the truth and makes it sound best.
Finally, I would see an hour or two of boasting before a battle as equally important as the battle or at times more important, especially if the battle is more of a ritual headbutting contest than a trying to kill people contest - it could certainly be the warleader´s main skill in winning a battle, augmented by his force´s ability to fight. There is some Arthurian book which has this down perfectly and we also see ift before modern wars are waged.
