Those tiny fields occur mostly in the far west of Ireland where the land was better at growing stones than grass or potatoes. While inheritance may have been part of it, the walls surrounding the tiny fields were a place to put the stones brough to the topsoil by cultivation and frost.

(I believe, from the mythology taught as history in Irish schools, that the "Celtic" inheritance system was imposed by the anti-Irish and anti-Catholic Penal laws in the 1600s and 1700s rather than being homegrown).

On-topic to Glorantha, there will be other factors beyond the social system that influence the size of fields including topograpghical features and soil quality.
