starting actions

I don't recall this being discussed on the list (I ought to look as find out if Yahoo has added a useful archive search function, I guess).

How do people tend to open the game to get into a strong position?

Playing on easy, our first priority is defence - so we build everything but the stone wall, recruiting more thanes at the beginning of Fire. Second on the docket is to get some of the mysteries known, start exploring our tula, and start setting up trade routes and buying off the worst of our neighbors. We tend to ask the ducks for 50 food, which annoys them, but by the time they're getting ticked we have the wherewithal to keep buying them off again, and we can drop the tribute as a goodwill gesture if the Delecti episode comes up (which is seems to do, eventually). Mysteries are something of a crapshoot, though we often try to get Earthblood going ASAP.
