Spanish flu probably arose in chickens. SARS too (?). They are routinely pumped full of tetracycline to prevent bacterial diseases.
When I worked with grouse, they were treated as chickens - i.e. be bloody careful not to catch anything off them. Especially the crap. The same would surely go for pigeons.

Now, if there are homing pigeons reared on the Plateau, that allows the Orlanthi to be the evil Malia cultists. Maybe even the heroes. Disease jumping from pigeons to chickens to humans, whatever, easy. Potentially a nasty disease in pigeons is mild in chickens, lethal in humans, whatever. Typhoid Mary as chicken.
