A very sensible way of picking a date. I see that "mustn't be too close to Easter" was also part of the reasoning.

Sartar. "Day 88".
"Boldhome was founded on "Day 88," better known as fire season, water week, stasis day, 1492. But Prince Sartar called it Day 88 when he did it, and it has remained that ever since. In fact, it is the 88th day of the Orlanthi year, one week before the Orlanth high holy day for the season." Or so says KoS.

A quick look at any Calendar will show a few problems with the concept of "water week, stasis day", of course. In fact the 88th day of the Orlanthi year is fire/stasis/wind, and it is indeed a week before the Orlanth holy day (not high holy day) for that season.

What do they celebrate then? Probably not much, under the Occupation (well, certain people think it's a good time to try to relight Flames, others think it's a good time to stay well away).

But for most of the country's history, yes, there are celebrations. In fact, the GloranthanCookery list came up with the Boldhome Pie, a remarkable dish which is prepared only on this day and symbolises the uniting of the tribes to form the kingdom. Each tribe contributes one ingredient, and a Great Pie is baked from them. The Prince, and each tribal king, would then eat a slice each.

There was once a tribal king (sorry, I don't remember/haven't yet made up which one) who sneaked bird meat into the Pie in the hope of tricking Sartar into breaking his vow to the Ducks never to eat another fowl. He failed, of course: Sartar detected the trick, and turned the dead meat into live blackbirds that first sang the perpetrator's name, then flew around until they spotted the girl who had actually sneaked the meat into the kitchens, and pecked her nose off. There's a song about it.....

oh, and this is also the day when tribal kings pay their taxes to the Prince, of course. End of the Boldhome financial year.
