YGMV but...

Lunars worship somethign which exists in a common Middle World home (kinda, sorta) whereas mixed worship is worshipping entities which may not have a common spirtual home. The latter is a matter of simple practicality. Lunar worship is actually optimized - as LUNAR worship -  but mixed magic is not and is a hodgepodge of different techniques.

For example, the Otter Rock clan (who live outside Fay Jee) are all more or less Orlanthi but many of them worship the spirit of Hallick's Clove for its ability to strike flints and others worship Saint Caselain to curry favour with the local Trader Princes.
