When disorder threatened to cause the machine to totally fall apart, they stepped forward and brought as much of the disorder into themselves as possible. If they did not exist, a vital part of the world machine would be irrevocably gone, but while they exist the machine cannot run smoothly. A few dare hypothesize that the disorder could somehow be squeezed out of them and eliminated, but for now they have to be tolerated.

And to pick up on the quantum theoriness of Sam's, they were two, or maybe more--certainly plural--but now are one, but which one is impossible to tell, and whenever someone tries to determine that, they seem to change into another one.

Although really I think the Mostalli are maybe more amusing without having a trickster element. That would....allow for hope of good fortune, in a way that seems to take out some of the lovely, gloomy, determinism.
