It took me way too long to figure out the connection.

The kitori seem to have a lot in common with the Only Old One. Maybe some divine ancestry, involving the living (demi) god who would appear as a magnificient human to a human viewer and a powerful troll to a troll... even at the same time.

Makes sense, and very cool!
