Are you going with the idea that it is as much about how the soul remembers/perceives those lives as it is what actually happened? I'm leaning that route. So you can read in the flame poem what the soul thinks/feels about its lives, but not more than that. Thus there could be only a small taint on the soul, but much self-flagellation in the flame poem for transgressions, and so on.
