Our campaign included Balazar inone form or another as a Yelmalian tried to unite the clans and bring fertility back. He became the Son of Balazar and almost made it as a client of the Empire before the campaign died.

Things that became immediately apparent:

1. Balazar is very big, much bigger than, say, Sartar
2. Balazar is pretty unfertile, with possible agriculture along the rivers
3. Balazar doesn't have a Grain Goddess. The closese thing is the fertility nymph, which is a Hunting Nymph not a Grain Goddess. I took this as her being a daughter of Genert, but with the focus on game beasts and huntingrather than on crops.
4. The hero Balazar tried to unite the tribes and become ruler of the land. He had some success before a dragon ate him. His work could be finished, uniting the citadels, uniting the Votanki Clans and bringing in the inhumans of the Elder Wilds.
5. Although the Redlands look to be an easy route for the Pentian invasion of the Lunar Empire, Balazar and the Elder Wilds seems as easy a route.
6. Balazar's technology is artificially low. Even though the hunter clans have had access to outsiders for centuries, they haven't accepted their religion or technology. They raided the EWF, raided Tarsh and raided Holay but absorbed very little. I can't simply accept "conservatism" as an answer. There must be more to it.
7. It seems odd that Balazar himself introduced pig herding into Balazar and nothing more has happened in 600 years. The oak forests of the north seem perfect for herding pigs.
8. Even though the Balazarings must know of Gonn Orta and his castle, they have virtually no trading with him. That seems odd as well. Certainly the giants building the citadels has left an impression but there is more to it, I think.

So, Balazar is an interesting place to adventure in. It has a different culture to the Heortlings and is the best place for trolls, dwarves and elves to become friends.

See Ya
